Why do people still love chain letters?  If you are continue getting those email chain letters saying something wonderful, or a miracles will happen, or you are going to get a stash of cash . . . WAIT! Don’t forward the chain letter. Let’s try and put a stop to them. If you agree that a little enlightenment is called for, just send an email reply to the sender with a link to this page. They will be able to read all the view, news and opinions on chain letters from around the web and realize their folly…

PS: There are no legal chain letters, no matter what people may say. I remember learning the hard way more than 30 years ago, before the advent of the World-Wide-Web and the dreaded email chain letters. I was young and naïve and had been sent the infamous L Green letter. Send $5 dollars to four names on the letter and add you own name at the bottom, so that others in the chain would send their $5 notes through the mail to get the Four Reports @ $5 each to give them all the info to resell in the chain letter format. It all made perfect sense to me back then. I had a bit of a mailing list so I thought “why not?”

Within a short period of time I was getting $5 notes through the mail like there was no tomorrow. It seemed Too Good To Be True and you know what we say about TGTBT now? If it looks too good to be true it probably IS too good to be true. A few hundred bucks down the track I had a slightly different letter through the mail. From a government department saying they had found me to be promoting a chain letter. In no uncertain terms I was to cease and desist immediately. Or Else!!

This was my first official warning. Well I stopped, but the chain was in full swing and the money didn’t stop coming into my PO Box. About a month later, Official Warning Number Two. Now, I was instructed to return any $5 notes with a copy of the official warning and advised, in no uncertain terms, that Official Warning number three would lead to penalties of $20,000 fines PER $5 kept and possible jail terms. It did not take long to quell the money inflow once I started returning the cash with the official warnings attached.

Variations on the L Green letter form the basis of most emailed money chain letters to this day.

Probably the most popular scam chain letters that continue to bug us are the virus warning emails and the old myspace chain letters.

I guess the only exception to the garbage chain letters are the funny chain letters, at least they give us a laugh. Perhaps you can post links to the funny ones in the comments below.
